Over the past year, I’ve met a lot of non-South Asian people who have seemingly always asked me the same question: can you wear a sari even if you are not Indian?

The answer, to paraphrase POTUS, is: YES YOU CAN!

At Sari Closet, the online sari rental service founded earlier this year, we get this question very often, typically in the context of an impending attendance to the South Asian wedding of a friend or partner.

However, many are daunted by what looks like an intricate and complicated garment.   So to make wearing a sari seem less daunting, we wanted to give our non-South Asian friends some insights as to what they can expect when they wear a sari to their next South Asian wedding.

Here are actual questions that our experts – who we call “saristas”— have received from once-skeptical customers who are now sari enthusiasts.

Q. What will the other guests think of me wearing a sari?
A. They will be ecstatic.  South Asians typically love sharing their culture with others, and appreciate when others make an effort to learn our culture.

Q. Will I offend anyone by wearing a sari?
A. No, there is no religious connotation to the sari or to the bindi on your forehead.

Q. How difficult is it to wear?
A. It’s far easier than it looks.  On the Sari Closet YouTube channel, you’ll find a video on how to wear (we say “drape”) a sari.  The interns went from never having worn a sari before to being an expert on an instructional video in less than an hour.

Q. Will it really change my experience at the wedding?
A. ABSOLUTELY!  We hear this all the time from our non-South Asian friends.  If you show up to the wedding or reception wearing a Western outfit, you are a spectator; if you are in a sari, suddenly you are a part of the lovely chaos.

We’ve heard stories of being thrust onto the dance floor by random “uncles”, getting asked to advise on how the dishes are being prepared by the kitchen, and even being set up with a “good Indian doctor” by your “aunties” — either way, an unforgettable experience!

Q. Do I need to have a certain body type to wear a sari?
A. ABSOLUTELY NOT!  Because saris are essentially just one really long piece of fabric, they are one-sized fits all.  Thus, any woman can look beautiful and elegant in a sari.

Q. Is there a specific color I should wear?
A. Not really.  Generally, for a wedding or reception, I would avoid black as the dominant color.  But other colors are fair game.

Generally speaking, the saristas recommend bold, dark colors for those with a fairer skin complexion, and bright, lighter colors for those with darker skin complexions.

Q. What types of saris would you advise a non-South Asian to wear?
A. If you are not South Asian, but appear in a sari at the wedding or reception, you will stand out—in a good way, as someone who is ready to dive feet-first into the event and culture.  This means that no pattern or color is too bright or too loud.

So this should give you the confidence that you need to wear a sari.  Of all of our non-South Asian friends who have worn saris to weddings, exactly none of them have said that they didn’t enjoy the experience.  In short: go bold!”

Hello dolls! As many of you beautiful brides, bridesmaids, and mother-in-laws to be know looking your best on the big wedding day is very important.  Most of all working with people that know how to create your dream look is even more important.  From hair, make-up, mendhi, clothing to photography hire the professionals so they can take care of it and deliver beyond your expectations!

Some helpful hints…

When you are shopping around and looking for the right lengha, sari, salwar, or gown always tell the designer how you want to feel in it.  It is very important for a bride to not only look her best, but most of all own the look she is trying to rock.  So don’t just get what a celebrity is wearing, get something that suites your style, body, and personality.  It will make a huge difference when we get to hair, make-up and photography!

In addition to that, you want to sit down with a seasoned hair, make-up & henna team that can help create the rockstar bridal look.  Finding the right team to do this can be hard as there are a lot of hair and make-up artist out there, but you want someone that is going to listen to you and your needs instead of just giving you a look they think is right for you, but keep in mind their suggestions are usually right since they are the professionals.  When you set-up your trial bring inspiration pictures of celeb looks or even friends who have recently gotten  married whose look you have just adored as this will help explain your vision in more detail.  A lot of brides know what they want but they don’t know how to explain it so it just helps put your vision into words and get a clear image for your glam squad.

Additionally hire the right photographer that can deliver the everlasting glamourous images.  You want to work with a photographer that not only understands your vision, but who works well with your style team that can help make your look and images everlasting.  To all the beautiful brides to be out there, don’t skip out on this step as it’s important to have the right team in place on your big day!

As we all like to dream to be a princess bride, I start you off with lyrics to an amazing song yet romantic filmy song:  Raja Ko Raani se Pyaar Ho Gaya, pehli  naazar mein pehla pyaar hogaya  This translates to the king is in love with the queen in his first glance and it only took one glance for this to be true for the two.  This bring us to the story of Vijay and Sapna met who July 17th,  2009 at a mutual friend’s event.  The two were destined to be together  as their paths had  crossed many times to the point that they even have 153 mutual Facebook friends.    Upon reconnecting the two immediately drew an attraction to each other only to realize they were so alike and shared mutual interest and family values.  All this led to them growing their dating relationship further.

Nine months later Vijay planned a trip to South Beach during the weekend of May 7th, 2010.  Between Sapna running out of gas in her car, Vijay locking them out of his house, and a crazy taxi cab driver who almost killed them, they managed to make it to their destination, The Tides Hotel!  Located in the heart of South Beach with hospitality and scenery that words cannot describe, the couple was ready for an amazing candid weekend of togetherness.

After arriving in South Beach and settling in Vijay & Sapna had dinner reservations at the famous South Beach hotspot WISH.  Over dinner they enjoyed intimate conversations about how happy they were to find each other and how fast their relationship had flourished, both felt as if they had known each other for years.  After dinner Vijay kept insisting that they go hang out at the hotel pool or go do something.  Sapna was all for it as her plan was to end up going to sleep, but little did she know Vijay had a major surprise in store for her.  As they arrived back to The Tides Hotel Sapna was very impressed by the hotel staff who came to personally greet them and ask them about their evening out.  The two enjoyed a few luscious libations at the hotel bar before calling it a night, or at least that’s what Sapna thought.  As they got off the elevator and Vijay opened the door to the room, much to Sapna’s amazement she was adorned by a blanket of rose petals accompanied by an ambiance of glittering candles all over from the floor to the furniture to the bed and balcony.

Clearly Sapna’s reaction was: “Oh my god, what are you doing,”  at  which  point Vijay took  her by the window, got down on  one  knee and expressed what she meant to him along with the famous words every girl wants to hear, “Will you marry me?”    As  Sapna jumped up and down in circles with glee she accepted  his proposal with a big “YES, and I am going to be the future Mrs. Vijay Vanmali!!!!”    The two enjoyed the rest of their evening with some champagne to begin the celebration of starting their  journey together.

After getting engaged Sapna and Vijay really brainstormed on what was important to them and how they wanted their wedding to be.  First of all Sapna is no ordinary Maharani, she comes with a great sense of simplicity, sophistication and modern style.  So of course a wedding outside of her home state of Georgia was the way to go.  Both Vijay and Sapna dreamt of having an intimate small wedding on an island with close family and friends.  Most of all they wanted to make sure that the guest got to enjoy the wedding and take advantage of being on vacation at the same time.  So the planning began…their canvas was the beautiful Dutch Caribbean Island of Aruba where not a lot of their guest have explored and it was small enough but large enough to accommodate what their 200 guest would enjoy.  The Westin Aruba Resort was the host hotel where all guest stayed and the platform for Vijay’s Vidhi, Welcome Dinner, Wedding and Reception.   Approximately 4 miles down the road Sapna and her family occupied an amazing Tuscan Villa situated in the hills of Aruba overlooking the ocean.  The home was a true entertaining stage for all of their guest during the week of the wedding where the Patel  family showed their hospitality with extravagant dinners throughout the week, and also hosted Sapna’s Vidhi, Mendhi, and Sangeet Night Dinner.

Their ceremony took place on May 21, 2011 on the amazing beach adjacent to the Westin Aruba Resort & Casino, the view was impeccable and working with Sapna to bring her vision to life was just breathtaking.  It truly made the wedding ceremony that much more special to incorporate components of the earth, wind and fire in the joining of two souls with the beautiful blue waters and white sand of Aruba!.    This couple definitely knew how to keep it simply, sophisticated with style…

The couple flew in some of the best vendors from the US to help execute their expectations and vision, which is very important when planning a destination wedding on such a large scale.

This truly was a destination wedding fit for the royally stylish..Congratulations Sapna & Vijay!

Stay tuned for the amazing Same Day Edit Video Feature in our next post.

Nirjary from KIS (cubed) Events and Ross from Ross Oscar Knight Studios always wanted the opportunity to work their magic together so our team jumped (literally) on the chance to organize a elegant yet simple photo shoot. You know a simple photo shoot with six models, four horses, two canoes and about forty people helping all on a 1,100 acre property.

We may have gotten a little carried away but can you blame us? We were  working with the most magnificent vendors who just kept wanting to bring and do more for us. We couldn’t be rude and say no!

It all started when Ross, Nirjary and Reshma went to meet with Maria from Fox Hall Sporting club to do a site visit. We got there and decided to shoot in 14 locations – eventually we narrowed it down but you can’t give creative people that 1,100 acres and not expect them to run wild. Especially when we met Karen, the stable manager, who offered us multiple horses and her entire stable. It was all coming together and multiplying so we decided we needed to call for backup.

Kelly and Dan from Tents Unlimited and Events Rentals Unlimited graciously provided us with the elegant gypsy tents that they just added to their inventory. Kelly then referred us to Something Borrowed Rentals where we met Jessica & Donna, who literally brought out their entire vintage furniture inventory for us.

We even brought out a few of our own Bridal Elements senior stylists to get each of the models photo ready. We wanted to capture the whole production so we had Ryan Rodninis from Rodinis Films come with his broken leg and capture the entire day’s events.

We all arrived at 4:45am and we were off! The day was a whirlwind and I couldn’t have done it without the help of each and every person there. Thank you all and we can’t wait to share the images with you. Until then,  here is the amazing BTS video created by Ryan….It’s truly amazing to see!

Jeff Silver & Shwetha Gupta were two of the most amazing people to have ever met.  Their rich family heritage and strong bond with each other just made their wedding planning process that much more captivating and special for us.    See how the rich vibrant colors of Shwetha’s  South Indian culture were tied into the longing traditions of Jeff’s  historic Jewish heritage.    Their families referred to their wedding as their big fat HindJew wedding!  They had guest fly in to Atlanta from Trivandrum to Texas.  The Ritz Carlton Downtown-Atlanta was the stage  for their weekend of festivities ranging from a Rehearsal Dinner, Mendhi/Henna, Welcome Dinner, Hindu Ceremony, Jewish Ceremony and Reception.  The amazing  cinematic video below  has captured the  3 days of 5 events and a pageantry of  golds, gowns and glam galore.
